The Current Range Of Teaching Assistant Courses Explained

In the UK Teaching Assistants are still not officially required to hold any formal qualifications. However, in reality most schools now only fill new Teaching Assistant posts with qualified people. This means completing a Teaching Assistant Course is a good move.

Finding the correct Teaching Assistant course for you takes a little of your time and some careful research. There are 2 main kinds of Teaching Assistant courses available. They are divided up into work related or work based courses, a subtle but important difference. Which course you can take depends on your personal work circumstances.

The NVQ courses are all work based. To qualify to do an NVQ course you need to currently be working in a classroom, in an assistance role. You will also need to find a teacher or a similar person to act as a mentor for you. Your role at the school need not be a paid role you could just be working at the school as a volunteer.

Instead of taking an NVQ course you could choose to take a BTEC course instead. Like the NVQ a BTEC course is work based, so you must be working in a classroom to complete the course. There are 3 levels of BTEC course, which is right for you depends on your current level of responsibility and how experienced you are. In order to take a BTEC course you usually need to have passed a few GCSEs or equivalent qualifications.

There are several other Teaching Assistant Certification or Diploma courses that do not require you to be currently working in a classroom. These are considered to be work related courses. You can take these courses remotely without stepping foot in a classroom, however at the end of most of these courses you are usually assessed in a classroom environment.

Tips For Homeschooling Your Gifted Child

Many children go to school and find that it is not enough of a challenge for them. Being a gifted student can put children in a precarious position; either being bored at school because they aren’t being challenged, or being set ahead in their grade and risk the wrath of other children because of their brighter than average minds. Many parents of gifted children find that the best course of action is to home school their gifted child, in order to let them learn at their own pace.

In a public school system, your child only move as fast as the slowest student, essentially putting him or her far behind their potential. But before you pull your above-average child out of traditional school, or begin home schooling your bright kindergartner, there are some aspects that you should carefully consider.

As a gifted student, your child may require some extra curriculum, and extra curriculum will add to your cost as a homeschooler. While many children learn well using every day applications or minimal amounts of curriculum, your gifted student may thrive best on workbooks and extra books. While the public library should be able to alleviate some of the financial stress, you may find yourself purchasing more than you thought you would have to, therefore making homeschooling a sometimes expensive option.

Consider the effect that homeschooling will have on your gifted student socially. There is a good chance that because you have a gifted child, he or she already has trouble fitting in with general students or making friends. Traditional school is the traditional way to socialize your grade-schooler. If you find that your gifted student isn’t making friends while homeschooling, consider other homeschooling groups, sports and other activity groups in order to get your child out and making friends without the traditional school setting.

Finally, there is a lot of consideration that needs to go into how much time a parent can commit to the homeschooling of their gifted child. Even if your child requires minimum supervisions, homeschooling requires a generous time commitment from the parent in regards to curriculum planning, teaching and checking and supervising the work.

If you already have a lot on your plate and don’t think you can devote at least four hours per day to your child’s education, then perhaps a traditional school may still be your best option. Talk with your child’s teacher about ways to keep him or her challenged, and you may see him or her flourish in any learning setting.

Why Students Struggle with Fractions

One of the most challenging topics in a typical math class is the learning of fractions and their operations. Why does Johnny (Jenny) struggle with the concepts of fractions, decimals, and percentages? I believe that these ideas are not taught effectively in most elementary classrooms. Teachers tend to move quickly through the lessons at this time in elementary school (usually 3rd or 4th grade), and tend to treat fractions as an abstract idea.

When learning to speak, infants are taught to point to an object and repeat the word that the adult speaks. These nouns become the buiding blocks of language, and numbers and counting is done the same way.

Primary grade students learn to count objects in their world, moving on to basic number pattern ideas and labels such as multiples of 5 and 3, and the concepts of odd and even. But these are whole number ideas, and partial numbers (fractions and decimals) tend to be introduced on paper as an abstract idea. In other words, teachers should be repeatedly showing students what a third of something is, or how to cut things up into equal pieces, etc.

I am not saying that this is avoided in elementary school, just that students are not given enough exposure to those ideas. Students should not be doing worksheets where they practice adding fractions with unlike denominators until they can draw pictures of these fractions, or show how to cut them up into equivalent pieces. The concrete learning idea of manipulating objects to show a mathematical idea needs to be embedded into the minds of young learners before they can practice similar math ideas on pencil and paper. This curriculum piece tends to be skipped or rushed in most elementary classrooms.

Students who are not ready to move on to do fraction work (or decimals or percentages) are either unsuccessful the rest of their math careers, or memorize the algorithms and get stuck later in higher level math courses.

Either case requires extra help to survive high school or college math curriculum because the developmental phases in mathematics cannot be avoided. If a student didn’t understand a fundamental concept such as fraction operations, they will not be successful in learning topics that use these ideas, such as solving equations, graphing linear relationships, or manipulating precalculus problems.

So, if you are a parent of a child who struggles in math, take a look at how your son or daughter expresses the ideas of fractions. Ask them to show you what 2 thirds looks like, or what 8.6 means, or to make a model of what percent 8 out of 10 represents. Can they do it?

If not, find a quality online math tutor who can diagnose the developmental phases of what your child has missed in the classroom. A highly skilled, experienced teacher can help fill in those gaps in learning, make it fun, and help your child to once again rediscover their math confidence!

The Pros & Cons of Private Student Loans

College students are often cautioned to avoid private student loans unless absolutely necessary, urged instead to take advantage of all other financial aid options first.

The advice is sound. Generally speaking, private student loans, which are offered by banks, credit unions, and other private lenders, dont offer the same level of borrower protections and benefits that government student loans do.

As a student, you should seek out grants and scholarships first — money for college that you wont have to repay — before taking on student loan debt. Then, if youre still going to need college loans, you should, in general, make sure youve maximized all your available federal student loans before you consider taking out a private student loan.

>> Interest Rates & Repayment Options

Federal education loans have fixed interest rates and more flexible repayment terms than private loans. The Department of Education offers income-based repayment options that keep your monthly payments at a figure you can afford, repayment extensions to give you more time to repay, and loan deferments and forbearances that can temporarily postpone your student loan payments if youre facing financial hardship.

If you go to work in the public sector, you may also be eligible for the discharge of some or all of your federal student loan debts.

With private student loans, on the other hand, your interest rate is almost always variable, and private lenders arent required to provide the kind of repayment flexibility that comes standard on federal college loans.

The current foreclosure crisis that began mushrooming, in part, because of adjustable-rate mortgages should be enough to make anyone leery of adjustable-rate loans on anything.

But its worth keeping in mind that when interest rates are low, as they are now, adjustable-rate private student loans can have a lower interest rate than their fixed-rate federal counterparts.

If you have excellent credit, or if you have a parent or co-signer with excellent credit, you may qualify for the lowest-rate private college loans, which currently carry interest rates that are as much as 3-percent to 6-percent lower than the rates on federal student and parent loans.

Interest rates are destined to rise as the economy continues to recover from the recession, so private loan rates wont always be this low, but if you or your parents are in a position to pay that private student loan off relatively quickly, you may be able to save money over a government-issued college loan.

>> Covering Your College Costs

So why take out a private student loan at all?

Private student loans are meant to “fill the gap” in college funding that may be left after you reach your federal student borrowing limits. In many cases, families find that scholarships and federal financial aid simply arent enough to cover the rising cost of college.

Without private student loans, you may not be able to pay for college or continue your studies.
